Because all of us believe and understand in the fabric of the common bond of why we call ourselves American is to care for the men and women who wear the uniform and when they take off the uniform, we care for them when they are veterans.
If one could be friendly with women, what a pleasure – the relationship so secret and private compared with relations with men. Why not write about it truthfully?
A lot of women these days, a lot of young women don’t want to call themselves feminists. You have this cheap, hideous ‘girl power’ sort of fad, which I think is pretty benign at best, but at worst, I think it’s a way of taking the politics out of feminism and making it some kind of fashion.
I write for those women who do not speak, for those who do not have a voice because they were so terrified, because we are taught to respect fear more than ourselves. We’ve been taught that silence would save us, but it won’t.
I love women. I’m trying to do beautiful things with them. I’m not trying to insult them. My life is not about that.
